Petition #21686302

Abstract

Thomas B. Powell, "guardian of his daughter, Mary Powell," asks permission to sell a slave by the name of Nicholas. Powell charges "that he has in his possession, the property of his said ward a negro slave named Nicholas, commonly called Nick, who has become difficult to manage, and has run away several times." He informs the court that "for the purpose of securing said slave, he sent him to the state of N Carolina at a distance from the public enemy, and that said slave ran away ... as your Complainant has reason to believe, in an attempt to get to the public enemy." The petitioner therefore prays that "a decree may be entered authorising him to sell said slave, and to invest the proceeds of sale as the Court may deem best."
