Petition #21686305

Abstract

Edwin Lockett, guardian of William and Charles Anna Lockett, seeks to sell a male slave named Sam, the property of his wards. He informs the court that "the said negro is a valuable young negro man and has been hired in Henrico County for the present year." However, Lockett reveals "that the said negro has run away from the place to which he was hired and has given strong indications of an attempt to get to the Public Enemy." Noting that Sam is presently in jail "for safekeeping" and "has been of considerable expense to" William and Charles Anna, the petitioner apprehends that the slave "if an opportunity is allowed him will in all probability escape to the Public Enemy and thereby prove a total loss to his wards." Lockett therefore prays that "the Court will decree a sale of said slave and direct your complainant in what manner to invest the proceeds of sale so as to secure the interest of his wards."
