Mary Eliza Butler, a free person of color, asks for a divorce from her husband Matthew Butler. She claims that Matthew abandoned her approximately eleven years ago. Since that time Mary has "had to support herself, as best she could, by her individual efforts." During their early years of marriage Mary complains that Matthew "treated her in a most cruel & brutal manner, frequently abusing and beating her." Mary has also discovered that Matthew has had "frequent criminal intercourse at different times with other women & is now living & for some time past has been living in adultery with other women." Mary prays that the court will grant a divorce.
