Petition #30882908

Abstract

Victor Souza presents to the court that he is acting in the name and on behalf of Antoine Bordeaux, who has permanently left New Orleans for France. He explains that, upon leaving the country, Bordeaux had instructed him to sell all his property and emancipate all his slaves. He declares to the jury that he has already disposed of the property and now wants to emancipate the slaves, who are all natives of the state, before leaving the country permanently. The slaves to be emancipated are twenty-three-year-old Jeanne and her four children: eight-year-old Sophie, six-year-old Josephine, four-year-old Lise, and two-year-old Adèle. Souza vouches that Jeanne has "constantly behaved well," and that she is capable of "maintaining her four children" by her industry. He therefore asks the police jury to authorize him to emancipate the five slaves and proceed to the formalities, even though the children are not yet thirty years of age.
