Petition #30882910

Abstract

Honoré Landreaux presents to the police jury that, in 1812, he purchased from Mrs. Catherine Joly, widow Villamil, a female mulatto slave named Suzette and Suzette's two daughters named Arsène and Clara. He explains that he purchased the three women "merely with the intention of manumitting" them and the children born to them "thereafter," as soon as Suzette had reimbursed him for the price of the entire family's purchase. Landreaux further presents that Suzette, who is now forty-two years of age, has fully reimbursed him and he is therefore ready to emancipate the family and pass unto them "the act of freedom." However, because Arsène, Clara, and Charles, who are twenty-five, seventeen, and eighteen-months old respectively, are still under the legal age for emancipation, Landreaux asks the police jury to grant a special dispensation under the provisions of the law of "January 27, 1827," so that the children may "follow the condition of their mother." Landreaux vouches for Suzette's ability to provide for herself and her family [Original in English and French].
