Petition #30882915

Abstract

Jean Bourgoin is testamentary executor and universal legatee of the late Pierre Matignon. He presents to the court that he is desirous "of accomplishing" the wishes of the late Matignon, who had directed, in his 1815 last will and testament, that his male mulatto slave named Mathieu be emancipated as soon as the law "should permit." Bourgoin explains that Mathieu knows how to read and to write, that he is a "carpenter & joiner" by trade, and that he has "constantly led a good conduct." Bourgoin indicates that he "would be willing" to emancipate the now twenty-three-year-old Mathieu before he reaches the age of thirty, i.e., before the emancipation age. Bourgoin therefore asks the police jury the authorization to proceed.
