Joseph Buckmaster seeks permission to sell Manlove Butcher, alias Manlove Clarke, a sixteen-year-old life slave who ran away to Philadelphia. Buckmaster asks to be permitted "to dispose of the Said Manlove to any person residing within the City of Philadelphia aforesaid, to Serve until he shall arrive at the age of twenty eight years." The petitioner declares that after the term of service he is willing "the said Manlove shall be free."
