Jean Michinard prays for compensation for the mistreatment of his slave named Caroline. Michinard alleges that Caroline left his house on the sixth of January and was found sick the next day by Mr. Tufts. She was "immediately" sent to the jail where Simon Meilleur acted as jailer. Michinard claims that, when Caroline arrived at the jail, "she was not examined" or "properly attended to" by Meilleur. Her feet were frozen. According to Michinard, had Meilleur properly attended her, the "incipient sickness" might have been easily cured. Instead, "unmindful of his duty and of the city ordinances," Meilleur failed to notify Caroline’s owner and waited two days to apply to the jail physician. As a consequence of Meilleur’s "improvident and neglectful conduct," the slave "became in danger of her existence and lame for her life." Michinard asks the court to order Meilleur to compensate him $560, the value of Caroline.
