Thomas J. Cooley and Sidney A. Lacoste, "attorneys and counsellors at Law," present to the court that Cécile, a free woman of color, is "justly and legally indebted" to them in the sum of $500. They claim to have represented Cécile's interests in a legal suit, in which the plaintiff, one Marcellin Mayor, was attempting to "annul and set aside" the will of the late Mrs. Simon Porche. They allege they represented Cécile in both the district and supreme courts, and that their services were "reasonably worth" their fee of $500. However, Cécile has so far refused to pay and they seek the court's help in getting paid with interest, at the rate of 5%, until fully paid.
