Petition #20885631

Abstract

John Hagan seeks the emancipation of his twenty-six-year-old female mulatto slave named Lucy Ann Cheatam and her two children, Frederika, also known as Dolly, and William Lowndes. Hagan vouches that Lucy Ann and her children are not “subject to any mortgage or privilege,” that they are “of good character and sober habits,” and that they "have not been convicted of any criminal offence.” Hagan has already given public notice of his intention to free his slaves as required by law and he has filed his “bonds with securities and conditioned and payable as the law directs.” He therefore prays that the State of Louisiana be served a copy of his petition and cited to answer it through its District Attorney, and that, after due process of law, his slaves be freed with permission to remain in the state.
