Petition #21085802

Abstract

Stephen Odell, administrator of the estate of James Calcote, asks the court for permission to sell thirty slaves "at Forks of the Road" owned jointly by Calcote's estate and George Hitchings. Odell states that Calcote purchased the slaves through Hitchings and brought them to Adams County to be "disposed of as they usually are by persons engaged in trading in slaves." Odell and Hitchings both wish to sell the slaves as quickly as possible since many of the slaves are "liable to disease & death, owing to change in climate, [and] many of them have already been dangerously ill, and in their present situation they are likely to die or depreciate in value." Odell asserts that the estate owes more than $100,000 in debts that can only be satisfied by the sale of the slaves, which he calls a "perishable property."
