Bill of Sale. Priscilla Dowell sells to John H. Martin “a negro woman named Charlotte about twenty two years old and her child (a boy) named calvin about two years & ten months”, for $800. Charlotte and calvin “are now in the possession of Obediah Sprinkle & he [John Martin] takes them at his own risk and just as they are in every respect…”. No further information about Charlotte and calvin and what the risks might be, and “calvin” is deliberately not capitalized. The document was signed January 7, 1859, presented in Court January 1859, and registered February 1, 1859. See also NC.WIL.T.342.2 for another document involving Charlotte and Calvin, Sprinkle, and a couple of other Martins.
