Deed of Trust. William Adderton has several outstanding debts to members of the Hargrave family. To guarantee payment, he places in Trust with George Smith a Lexington town lot and “…all his right title and interest in six Negroes known as follows Jacob aged about forty years old Betsey aged about fifty years Massy aged about twenty two years Briant aged about four years Green aged about twenty two years and Rowlund aged about eight years…”. No further information about the enslaved’s relationships, but there probably are some. “Green” is a male name, but I am unsure about “Massy”. If Adderton does not pay his debts, Trustee Smith is to sell the enslaved and town lot to make payment. The document was signed April 7, 1838, presented to the Clerk of Court and registered on April 9, 1838.
