Manumission was recorded on 12 November 1811. [First document] "It is my intent that my two black servants Richard age about 36, and Betty his wife, age about 30 be free at the end of six years from the date hereof, they complying with the terms expressed in my written assignment of them to Joseph Wheaton for the above term of six years. This declaration is irrevocable on my part." Signed on 23 July 1811 by Joel Barlow. [Second document] Joel Barlow sells to Joseph Wheaton, for $400, the six year term of service for Richard and Betty that remains to Joel Barlow. The term of six years to be computed from this day. Also, stated in the document is the following: "said servants are to be diligent and faithful in the service of Joseph Wheaton or his assigns ... and if they should become idle or abscond from his service at any time within said term, he will have the right not only to reclaim and bring them back, but to require and force them to serve his or his assigns for a further time sufficient to compensate ... for his expenses and his loss of their time occasioned by their misconduct. But I give no other guarantee of their fidelity nor any insurance of the lives of said servants." Signed on 23 July 1811 by Joel Barlow.
