Abstract

Manumission was recorded on 8 October 1812. [First document] George Town [in the District of Columbia] 7 February 1803: "For value received I hereby sell ... to Mr. Jacob Wagner a Negro woman by the name of Maria." Signed by John Templeman. [Second document] Washington [DC] 9 March 1807: "I assign, transfer and set over the Negro woman, within mentioned, in consideration of $130, to George Boyd, Esq. of Washington City as a servant for four years and thereafter emancipate her from slavery." Signed by Jacob Wagner. [Third document] Washington [DC] 2 December 1807: "I assign, transfer and set over the Negro woman, within mentioned, in consideration of $100, to Alexander Kerr, Esq. of Washington City as a servant for three years and three months thereafter emancipate her from slavery." Signed by George Boyd, Esq. "I also warrant my title to her for three years and three months." George Boyd, Esq. [Fourth document] "I hereby certify that Maria, the woman above mentioned has served me three years and three months, being the remainder of the time for which she was sold by Mr. Wagner and she is now at liberty being a free woman to dispose of herself." Signed in Washington [DC] on 9 March 1811 by Alexander Kerr. [Fifth document] Washington Co. District of Columbia: "Personally appeared Alexander Kerr, who acknowledges the within named woman named Maria, to be free, she has served the time for which she was bound."
