Abstract

Manumission was recorded on 2 July 1813. John M. Goldsborough states that on or about 5 December 1811, he discharged and set free Jacob, who calls himself Jacob Bruce, from his employment with the intention of manumiting him, but the document was not witnessed and recorded according to law so it was not sufficient. Now he hereby declares that Jacob Bruce is set free "and liberated from all servidude to me or to any other person during his natural life." Signed by John M. Goldsborourh on 24 June 1813 in the presence of John Ott and John Crookshank, Justices of the Peace.
