Abstract

Certificate of discharge was recorded on 4 June 1816. George W. Hunter certifies that Negroes Ann age 14, Sarah age 10, Benjamin age 6, and Daniel age 4, children of Rebecca, were of the estate of Alexander Dow and by his list will and testament were emancipated or freed after having served, along "with their increase until they each" reach the age of 21. The children went to George W. Hunter under the will of Alexander Dow, and are now "delivered over to Vincent and Rebecca for the purpose of removing them from the state of Virginia." Signed by George W. Hunter, Executor of Alexander Dow, deceased. [Second document] Vincent: Certificate of discharge dated 4 May 1816: "I certify that Negro Vincent age about 38 is my property and I hereby give him his liberty, provided he leaves Virginia within 60 days and does not return to Virginia ... , if he fails to leave or returns after leaving, all privileges of freedom herein granted and intended shall thereupon cease and expire ... and he shall become a part of my estate and be deposed of accordingly." Signed on 4 June 1816 by George W. Hunter. [Third document] Rebecca [Beck] and daughter Nelly: Certificate of discharge dated 4 May 1816: "I certify that Negro Rebecca [Beck] was of the estate of Alexander Dow and by his will was emancipated, which will is of record in the County Court and that Negro Beck age 39 has since bore one child called Nelly ... , and that this is their discharge." Signed on 4 June 1816 by George W. Hunter. [Fourth document] John and George (sons of Rebecca): "Negroes John and George were of the estate of Alexander Dow and by his will were emancipated when they each reach 21 ... the will is of record in the County Court." John and George are "delivered up to their mother Rebecca to be by her removed from the state for the purpose of being bound" to some trade unti I they reach 21 years of age.
