Certificate of freedom was recorded on 15 July 1817. Jenny Shorter an old free black woman appeared before a Justice of the Peace for Washington Co., District of Columbia and swore that she was well acquainted with Mary Butler. She stated that Mary was a black woman, age 26, of middle size and good countenance, who was free born, and that she knew her from her birth and also Mary's two children Henry age 3 and John age 1. "This is to certify that. .. Mary and her two children are and ought to be permitted to pass and repass without molestation." Sworn and certified before Daniel Rapine, Justice of the Peace on 15 July 1817.
