Manumission was recorded on 26 July I 8 I 9. Lawson Clarke of Montgomery Co., Maryland, for$ I 0, states that Charles, commonly called Charles Bruce, a Negro man he purchased from John Nicholls, is freed from slavery. Charles is about 25 years old, and able to gain a sufficient livelihood and maintenance; he is to be henceforth free. Signed on 1 July 1819 by Lawson Clarke. In the left margin of the handwritten Liber the following is written: "Ex [Examined] and delivered to Charles Bruce (Paid)"
