Manumission was recorded on 2 June 1819. "To all whom it may concern, be it known that l Clement Smith of George Town in Washington County and District of Columbia, in consideration of the sum of $1.00 to me in hand paid, has released from slavery, liberated, manumitted and set free, and by these presents do hereby release a Negro man named Tom, age about 37 years and able to work and gain sufficient livelihood and maintenance, and l do declare the said Negro man named Tom to be henceforth free manumitted and discharged from all manner of servitude or service to me, my executors, administrators forever. Signed and affixed my seal December 28, l 818. Clement Smith"
