Abstract

Manumission was recorded on 21 December 1805. Henry Smothers of the City of Washington in the territory of Columbia "for divers good causes and considerations" grants freedom to Negro girl, Flora Smothers, aged between five and six years, who was purchased by me from Nancy Douglas of Montgomery Co., Maryland about 1800. Flora is to be free from the date hereof. [Compiler's note: This is a bit strange, young children under the District of Columbia Slavery Code could not be freed; not until they were capable of earning their own living. Flora seems too young to be freed.]
