Abstract

Manumission was recorded on 4 April 1808. Thomas Grafton Addison of Washington Co. in the District of Columbia, for five shillings, sets free a Negro man named Dick Forrest. Dick is about 32 years old, and paid the five shillings for his freedom. Signed on 23 March 1808 by Thomas G. Addison.

Certificate of freedom was recorded on 2 May 1808. "Registered in my office this 7 July 1807 as No. 36, Austin, a free man of color age about 35 years, 5' 6 ½" high, dark complexion, short curled hair, has a scar over the left eye and was emancipated by Peter Baker agreeably [in] his last will and testament duly proven and recorded in the County Court of Goochland [Goochland Co., Virginia] bearing date 23 August 1806 and recorded 20 April 1807." Signed by William Miller. "The above register was by Goochland Co. Court on 18 August l 807 certified to be truly made: Be it remembered that on 14 April 1808 came before me the subscribed Mayor of George Town, Jacob Diffenders, who made oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that he knows Austin, a man of color, the bearer of this, was set free and manumitted from bondage by his grandfather on 15 October 1806 in his last will and testament and that ever since the said Austin has been deemed and taken to be a free man."
