Abstract

Bill of sale was recorded on 12 September 1808. Archibald Orme of Washington Co. in the District of Columbia is indebted to William Smith of George Town and Thomas Hodges of Prince George Co., Maryland in the amount of 1,000 pounds. Archibald Orme has mortgaged some real property in Montgomery Co., Maryland, but it is inadequate as a security. It is, therefore, his wish to pledge property as a security for the interest on the principle sum to be accrued from 25 March 1806. Since William Smith's one-half portion (500 pounds) has been secured, but no security has been given to Thomas Hodges for his one-half portion of the 1,000 pounds. This document is to convey to Mr. Hodges such security, by selling a Negro man named Cyrus [or Syrus], who is about 23 years old and "is a proper slave for life." If Archibald Orme pays the accrued interest on or before 25 March 1810, then this sale is void. But if he fails to pay then this sale will be final and Thomas Hodges may "set up and expose to public sale the Negro man Cyrus, first giving ten days notice" but it will be up to Thomas Hodges to sell or not to sell Cyrus. Signed on 12 September 1808 by Archibald Orme.
