Abstract

Assignment was recorded on 13 February 1821. John Stile of George Town in the District of Columbia is indebted to George Davis of the same place, for a considerable sum on a judgment recovered by him in the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia, and part of the property herein mentioned has been taken under an execution of that judgment. John Stile by an Indenture dated 6 July last [ 1820) assigned to Richard Davis two Negroes therein and hereinafter mentioned to be sold. Richard Davis was obliged to take possession of the Negroes and advertise for their sale because John Stile neglected to pay the amount owing. But John earnestly requested that the Negroes not be sold but that further indulgence might be granted him and has proposed to give additional security; Richard Davis assented to his request. The amount owing from the judgment has increased due to interest and various expenses to the sum of $598.64. John Stile admits that is the amount now owing and for a consideration of $1.00 sells to Richard Davis two Negroes: Harry, a dark Mulatto age about 15, and Gannison, a Negro age about I 3. In addition, the following were also sold: a male slave named Charles age about IO years, a female slave named Charlotte age about 8, five beds and bedding for the same, a Mahogany dining table, a breakfast table, other tables and pieces of furniture and household and kitchen items - [a complete list is given in the document]. Richard Davis also has the power to hire out the slaves and to receive their wages. John Stile relinquishes all rights and controls whatsoever to Richard Davis, but all of the property is to be restored to John Stile as soon as he pays Richard Davis the above sum together with legal interest within six months from this date. But Richard Davis has the right to sell the slaves and the other property at the expiration of this six-month period, and if there is any balance after the sale, it is to go to John Stile. Signed on 7 February 1821 by John Stile. [Additional detail regarding the agreement not abstracted.] [Statement at end] John Stiles delivers the slave Charles to Richard Davis "in the name of the whole."
