Certificate of freedom was recorded on 3 July 1821. District of Columbia, Washington Co., George Town: Certificate states that evidence has been shown that Sarah Thornton, a dark Mulatto woman age 35, "is a free woman having been born of a free mother." The certificate continues "she has uniformly the character of honesty, sobriety and industry, and as such [is] entitled to all the privileges of a freeman. All good citizens are, therefore, requested to suffer her to pass and repass and about all lawful matters without Molestation." Signed on 23 May 1821 by Bernard Spalding, Justice of the Peace.
