Abstract

Bill of sale [ deed of trust] was recorded on 14 February 1822. Daniel Renner, for$ 1.00 and in further consideration to secure for the Bank of Columbia the payment of a debt for which the Bank holds Daniel Renner's note endorsed by William Talbott, sells in trust to Samuel Kurtz, the following Negroes: Sarah and her six children [none are named], Phillis and her son Isaac; Moses and Gilbert. In addition, the following was also mortgaged by Daniel Renner: "all the furniture belonging to, and now in, my dwelling house in George Town, 3 horses, 50 barrels of whiskey, 7 casks of liquor in my store and all other goods and groceries in my store on High Street [now Wisconsin Avenue, NW]." Samuel Kurtz is to hold this property in trust for 60 days from the date of this document, and if Daniel Renner pays $904 in part payment of the debt, and gives to the Bank a note well endorsed and secured for the balance of the principle, interest and costs payable in 60 days with the privilege of continuing the same with renewals, and it is paid off in payments of $150 every 60 days, then Daniel Renner's property will be returned to him. But if he should default, the property is to be sold at public sale. Signed on 26 January 1822 by Daniel Renner.
