Abstract

Bill of sale was recorded on 27 April 1821. Joseph Pearson and Robert Y. Brent of Washington City obtained judgment against Richard Bland Lee of the same place in the Circuit Court of the United States for Washington Co., District of Columbia for $1,500 damages and $12.96 costs and 84 cents additional costs. The damages to be released on payment of$703.80 with interest from I January 1819 until paid. Plaintiffs have sued [for] an execution of capias ad satis.faciendum against Richard B. Lee and caused him to be arrested by the Marshall of the District of Columbia. Now, Richard B. Lee agrees, in consideration of the execution not being called, to secure the plaintiffs of the judgment by selling and conveying in trust to William Brent various real estate and articles of personal property; lots [or lots] in square 502 in Washington, City, "and also all the slaves, goods and chattels, household stuff and furniture." If, after Joseph Pearson and Robert Y. Brent gives three months notice for payment, the amount owing is paid, then this sale and conveyance in trust will be null and void. However, if Richard B. Lee fails to satisfy and discharge the amount of the judgment, then William Brent as trustee "shall proceed to sell the lot or lots or so many of the slaves and other property as specified in ... a deed or indenture executed by Richard B. Lee to Richard Smith dated 11 June 1817, as may be sufficient to satisfy," giving 30 days notice of the sale in some newspaper printed in Washington City,
