1 Indenture, Deed or Bill of Sale. Benjamin Pugh and his wife Elizabeth sell their claim and title to an un-named, un-numbered group of enslaved people, “in possession of Mary Mizell, widow of Moses Mizell”. See NC.BER.HH.201.1 for another document about enslaved people previously owned by Moses Mizell and now in “life estate” with Mary Mizell. (There are no names there either.) I believe Moses’ will specified that after Mary Mizell’s death, at least some of the enslaved would pass to her daughter Judith Mizell Cail, and at Judith’s death, to her three children, plus Benjamin and Elizabeth Pugh. I don’t know how the Pugh’s got into the line, but in the current document, the Pughs are selling their “claim right title and interest to the negros now in the possession of Mary Mizell” to Robert R. Taylor for $200. “Mizell” in this document is spelled “Mizelle” in the earlier one, and likewise, “Cail” here is “Caile” there. The document was signed September 14, 1850 and presented in Court September 15, 1850.
