Bill of Sale. Evan Simpson and Gabriel Bailey “of Perquimans ” sell two enslaved people to James Rascoe for “two hundred twenty seven pounds and ten shillings”. The enslaved are “one man by the name of Bob and one woman by the name of Lydee”. No further information about the enslaved or their relationships. The document was signed March 19, 1796 and presented in Court May 1796. **Extra note from the Abstractor. Evan Simpson, Gabriel Bailey and John Bailey were responsible for several sales of enslaved people in Bertie Book R (and probably elsewhere). These men were listed as being from Perquimans, Chowan and Pasquotank Counties, to the east of Bertie , and the clerks were inconsistent in stating who was from where. They are sometimes listed as “Simpson & Bailey”, and were most likely in the slave-trading business. The enslaved people they were selling may have been related or may have come from the same places in Chowan, Pasquotank and Perquimans Counties. Since the sales were in Bertie , I logged the enslaved as being in Bertie , although they probably started out in one of the other counties listed. I suggest researchers who are looking for individuals look for Bailey and Simpson transactions in Chowan, Pasquotank and Perquimans Counties. In Bertie Book R, Simpson and/or Bailey’s transactions are listed at NC.BER.R.7.1, 114.1, 115.1, 126.1, 127.1, 127.2, 137.2, 177.1, 178.2, 210.1, 260.1, 315.1, 334.1, 343.1, 386.1, 406.1
