Deed of Trust. Randal Brummell and Charles Brummel, merchants doing business as “R&C Brummell” or “C&R Brummell” have run into deep financial trouble. The document lists more than $19,000 in debts to more than 40 individuals and firms, and many of the debts have securities. In order to protect their securities from financial liability and satisfy as many of the creditors as possible, Randal and Charles Brummel place into Trust with Jacob Brummell all of their business properties and some personal property as well. After listing “all the goods debts Bonds notes & open accounts & effects of every description which parties of the first part have at their stores…” in Davidson and Guilford Counties, NC, Chesterfield District, SC and Johnson County, TN, they include “also one negro man named Ben…”. No further information about Ben or his relationships, and I will assume he is in Davidson County. The end is probably near, since R & C Brummell direct Trustee Jacob Brummell to start turning the assets into cash “as soon as conveniently possible” and start paying the debts.
