Deed of Trust. John Clemmons owes Hiram Phelps $520. To guarantee payment, Clemmons puts into Trust with Joseph Clause “…a negro woman name [sic] Phebe and her son Manuel…”. No further information about Phebe or Manuel or their extended relationships. If Clemmons does not pay his debt by December 31, 1838, Trustee Clause is authorized to sell the enslaved and make payment. The document was signed and presented to the Clerk of Court on March 19, 1838 and registered on March 20, 1838.
