Joseph Spurgin gives to his stepson Charles Mock “…one certain negro slave named Nathan which Negro was Considered to be worth sixty dollars when he was two years old…”. No further information about Nathan’s current age or relationships, or why Spurgin is including a value. The document was signed February 21, 1840, presented in Court May 1840 and registered June 11, 1840. (Abstractor’s note: Davidson County Deed Books 6 and 7 were microfilmed By the North Carolina Dept. of Archives and History, on one roll of microfilm (December 9, 1966). The “roll” has internal identification number 1575, and has Family Search identification number 007539232.
