Deed of Trust. Jacob Tise Jr. and Peter M. Tise have accumulated about $550 worth of debts, with several creditors and securities. In order to protect the securities and guarantee payment, the Tises put into Trust with William Kennedy, Jr. “…all the following property to wit one Negro Woman Called Rose…”, two tracts of land, “stilling apparatus”, crops, etc. No further information about Rose’s age or relationships. There are two William Kennedys—William Jr. is the Trustee and a creditor, and William Sr. is a creditor. If the Tises do not pay their debts, Trustee Kennedy is authorized to sell Rose and other items in the Trust, and tone of the document is that selling could start soon. The document was signed September 18, 1840, presented to the Clerk of Court September 19, 1840 and registered September 22, 1840.
