Abstract

Marriage Contract, called “Articles of Agreement” and Deed of Trust in the document. Allice Slater of Davidson County intends to marry Remus J. West of Randolph County, and wants to keep the property she is bringing into the marriage separate from her new husband’s property. Allice S. places into Trust with A. F. Smith 130 acres of land and “…the following personal property to wit one Negro Man named Cupid about the age of thirty five years…”, along with livestock, farm tools, grain, furniture, etc. and her anticipated share of the estates of F. Slater (perhaps her previous husband, assumed to be deceased) and James Smith (deceased, perhaps her father). No further information about Cupid or his relationships, but he may have been previously owned by either F. Slater or James Smith. A.F. Smith is charged with making sure these assets are used for the benefit of Allice Slater, and not commingled with Remus West’s. The document was signed December 22, 1840, presented in Court May 1841 and registered May 25, 1841.
