Deed of Gift, but called Bill of Sale because of the token amount of money exchanged. Samuel Vanelon of Davie County gives his son Abraham Vanelon of Gibson County, Tennessee “…a certain Negro Boy named Ned of a yellow complection about nineteen years of age…”. No further information about Ned or his relationships, and “yellow complection” in these documents means he’s of mixed race. Samuel Vanelon says he is “reserving possession of said Negro Man Ned during my natural life…”. The current document was signed September 25, 1839 and presented to the November 1839 session of the Davie County Court.
