Abstract

Deed of Gift. Jesse Minton gives to his daughter Bethany “one negro girl name Easton aged about six or seven and her increase…” No further information about Easton’s relationships. Bethany is either married to or will soon be married to John Mikel, and the document refers to her as both Bethany Minton and Bethany Mikel. The deed also includes $1 from Bethany to Jesse Minton to solidify the deal. The document specifies that Easton is for the benefit of Bethany, and that her husband John can’t “sell or convey” Easton, and that Easton “and her increase” will pass to Bethany’s heirs at Bethany’s death. The document was presented in Court August 1851 and registered September 20, 1851. I think the signature date is September 25, 1837, which would have been unusually long before. The date may be September 25, 1851, but then it would have been registered before being presented in Court before it was signed. Suggest interested parties look at the original document.
