Abstract

Deed of Gift. John Finley gives to his son John (J?L?T?) Finley six enslaved persons. The ambiguous text is as follows: “The following Negro Slaves To Wit one Negro man named Jo aged about Twenty Eight years one Negro Boy named Preasley aged about fourteen or fifteen years one Negro Girl named Betsey aged about thirteen years one Negro Girl named Levina aged about ten years one Negro named Henry a girl about eight or nine years old…” The is inserted above the other text line. I think the clerk left out Henry’s age and left out the name of the eight or nine year-old girl, and I will log them that way. It’s possible that the clerk intended to say Henry was a boy eight or nine years old, and there is no un-named girl. The 1850 Census Slave Schedule for the elder John Finley might give hints. No further information about the enslaved’s relationships in this document. The document was signed February 13, 1852, presented in Court May 1852 and registered June 25 1852.
