Abstract

Deed in Trust. Samuel W. Starns of Williamson County, Tennessee, places four enslaved children in Trust “for the separate and sole use and benefit of the said Mary E. Wellborn [Starns’ sister] and her children…” The enslaved are: “the following negro slaves…one negro boy named William Carter aged about nine years also one other negro boy named Charles aged about thirteen years also one negro girl named Martha aged about eight years also one other girl named Martha aged about twelve years…”. I am assuming “William Carter” are first and middle names, although “Carter” might be a surname. I also will call the two girls Martha #1 and Martha #2. Trustees are A.A. Scroggs and Anderson Mitchell of Wilkes County, NC and L.H. Moseley of Williamson County, TN. No information in the document about the relationships of the enslaved, and I’m assuming they will end up in Wilkes County. Document was signed and presented in Court July 22, 1852 and registered September 6, 1852. Note that NC.WIL.R.313.1, 314.1, 438.1 439.2 and maybe 439.1 are all related, although the “cast of characters” is different in each.
