Abstract

Deed in Trust. Amanda Williams is moving, and puts a 100 acre property, three enslaved people, livestock and furniture in Trust with Hugh R. Williams. The enslaved are “my negro boy Lawson about twenty years & my negro woman Lydia about seventeen years old & her child Calvin about three months old”. There is no further information about the enslaved’s relationships, but it’s tempting to think they might be a family. Hugh Williams is to “possess” the land and enslaved people, and manage the “rents and proffits” for the sole benefit of Amanda Williams, independent of any husband she might have. At Amanda’s death, the land and slaves will pass to, I think, Amanda Williams’ heirs and the heirs of Hugh Williams’ children: Olly Ludoske Williams, George Williams, Francis Williams. The document was signed February 29, 1852, presented in Court August 1852 and registered September 24, 1852.
