Bill of Sale. Mary E. Wellborn, and A.A. Scroggs, Trustee for Mary Wellborn, sell “a certain Negro girl named Martha about 12 years” to C.E. Parkes for $650. The document notes that Martha was gifted to Scroggs as Trustee to Mary Wellborn by Mary’s brother Samuel W. Starnes of Tennessee on July 22, 1852. No further information about Martha or her relationships in this document. Signed April 19, 1853, presented in Court May 1853 and registered June 7, 1853. Note that NC.WIL.R.313.1, 314.1, 438.1 439.2 and maybe 439.1 are all related, although the “cast of characters” is different in each.
