Bill of Sale, of an un-named twelve year-old. Sarah Gray sells to Chapman Lewis “one boy man about twelve years old now in the possession of John Sale, Jr. also one third part of the present crop of corn” for $125. Calling him “boy man” is clear in the original document. This is the first sale of an un-named enslaved person I’ve seen, out of hundreds of documents. Document was signed August 11, 1855, presented in Court September 1, 1855 and registered October 23, 1855.
