Deed in Trust. A.A. Whittington is indebted to several people, and transfers what may be all of his land, slaves and possessions to Trustees John W. Whittington and W.R. Whittington. The Trustees are authorized to sell any or all of the listed possessions, including the enslaved, if A.A. Whittington doesn’t pay the debts by January 1, 1860, but he keeps possession of everything until then. The enslaved are listed: “one Negro man named Jerry aged sixty years, one Negro man named George aged fifty years, one Negro woman named Hannah thirty five years of age, one Negro boy named Alexander aged four years, two Negro Girls named Hannah and Sarah one two years and the other about one year of age.” No information about the enslaved’s relationships in the document, but there are probably parents and children in the group. A.A. Whittington also puts into Trust tracts of land with 100, 150, 247, 194, and 200 acres, plus several horses, 16 cattle, 40 hogs, “all my blacksmith tools”, all his house and kitchen furniture, etc., so he was at one time a prosperous guy. The document lists debts, all of them currently due, to “William Murphy & Co”. John D. Brown, Jesse Whittington, Elizabeth Whittin
