Bill of Sale, from an estate. John Welborn and Williamson Campbell, Executors of the estate of James Mabrey, sold “one Negro man named Sam aged about thirty five years” at public sale to Aley Mabrey, for $1251. No further information about Sam or his relationships. The sale price was high, and reading between the lines, Aley might have been an heir of James Mabrey, and really wanted possession of Sam for some reason. Wilkes County records contain variations on “Mabrey”—Mabeary, Maberry, Mabry, but they are probably all the same family. The sale and probably document signing were February 27, 1858, and the Bill of Sale was presented in Court May 1858 and registered June 10, 1858.
