. “Agency & Deed in Trust”. This document is relatively complex, and there seems to have been a lot of drama going on behind the scenes. However, the role of the enslaved is pretty straightforward: Jude, aged about 46 years and her two children, Elvira about 11 and Joe, about 1, are put into a Trust set up by Priscilla Dowell, with James Gwyn as Trustee. No further information about the enslaved and their relationships, but Priscilla was concerned enough about them that she specified they could be hired out, but only to “prudent and kind masters near bye at reasonable rates...”. The drama: “…the said Priscilla Dowell is informed that certain persons have attempted to have her declared a lunatic in order to have a guardian appointed for her of their number and thus enable them to get possession of her slaves and effects to swindle and defraud her…” In addition to the three enslaved, Priscilla also puts into Trust all her household and kitchen furniture, a note due to her from John H. Martin for $800, due January 8, 1859, a note due her from Thomas B. Martin for $350 due May 24, 1859, a note due to her from Nathan Martin for $800 due December 26, 1859, and $700 cash.
