“Mortgage”. Bill of Sale, but no money has changed hands yet. James M. Hendrix agrees to sell to James B. Gordon “one Slave a Negro girl named Elizabeth aged about eleven years (11) and I do hereby warrant the said Negro Slave Elizabeth to be sound in body and mind and free from constitutional diseases and defects…”. No further information in the document about Elizabeth’s relationships. Sale price is $575, to be paid by July 15, 1860. Elizabeth is collateral for the mortgage, and would return to Hendrix if Gordon does not pay. Document was signed and presented in Court April 7, 1860, and registered April 9, 1860.
