Petition #20184701

Abstract

In 1827, Harriet Linder married Daniel Johnston, but for many years he did nothing to support the family. Besides being shiftless, Harriet asserts, Daniel is a man with "a high temper and revengeful disposition" who does nothing for their six children. Harriet owns, by inheritance a small amount of real property--land in Baldwin and Mobile counties. She also owns four slaves, including a woman and her three small children. She fears that, if she and her husband remain married, she will lose this small estate. Harriet seeks a divorce, and asks that her husband's "right, title, and interest" in the land and slaves be turned over to her.

Result: Dismissed.
