Lucy Crawford, a woman of color, states that Martha Scott agreed to allow Crawford to purchase her freedom for $180 over the course of five years. Crawford states that she has paid Scott $159 and is now able to pay her the remaining $21. However, Scott has had her arrested and is planning to sell Crawford as a slave for life beyond the jurisdiction of the court. Crawford asserts that she has a petition for her freedom pending in court and seeks an injunction to prevent Scott from selling her beyond the limits of the District of Columbia.
