Abstract

William Powell represents that he purchased a female slave named Sabry for the sum of $200 from Robert Bell and Thomas W. Coker. Powell accuses the defendants of "falsely & fraudulently warranting the said Negro Girl to be sound & of good health." According to Powell, Sabry “was afflicted with & Subject to divers diseases disorders & maladies & particularly ... to periodic or monthly fits & Convulsions," which have rendered her to be not only "of no use & value to your petitioner," but also a liability because of maintenance and medical expenses amounting to $300. The petitioner sues for $500 in damages.
