- Orleans Parish, Louisiana. cicra November 1831. - December 16, 1831.
- Court: Police Jury
- Salutation: To the Honorable James Pitot, President and members of the Police Jury for the City and Parish of New Orleans
Abstract
Etienne Fortier, a free man of color, presents the following facts to the police jury. In 1829, he purchased, from one Marie Celeste Livaudais, née Marigny, his four "natural," i.e. illegitimate, children: Edmond, Celestine, Henry, and Françoise. The latter died in 1830. Fortier also recently purchased, from the same Marie Celeste Livaudais, his wife Phrosine, mother of his children, and one other child named Armand; both purchases having been made under the condition that he would immediately emancipate all of them. He asks the police jury to authorize him to appear before the parish court and "demand" that the legal formalities "been gone through toward setting free" his family.
Result: Granted.
