Petition #20986028

Abstract

John Van Ness Philip of New York is the guardian of Flora Johnson, daughter of the late John Johnson. Part of Flora's inheritance from her father included "a negro girl named Alice" who is currently "at service in Annapolis." Philip describes Alice as being "turbulent, troublesome, and unmanageable, and he fears that she may be induced to run away." Since he and Alice live in New York, Philip states that "it is impossible for him to control or look after the said slave properly." He asks the court to allow him to sell Alice and invest the proceeds "in some productive form."
